Meeting Junkie No More
Good questions. I am having quite the difficulty with the Memorial myself this year...really don't want to go; probably have to on account of family still in...
Anyhow, recently discovered that the bread and the wine thing goes back all the way to Melchizedek - Genesis 14:17-19...
So my questions is: Did this whole institution of a "Lord's Evening Meal" even take place, or this just written into the so-called New Testament to 'fulfill' Old Testament ramblings? Remember the Gospels were written AFTER Paul's letters; most likely after the destruction of Jerusalem. Methinks that perhaps the new "Christian" group were desperately trying to make sense of the reason for the destruction of the Jewish conglomerate and God's apparent rejection of its entire system - and so there had to be institution of a different covenant - bread and wine again the SYMBOL....
My 2c
Will probably HAVE TO sit through the charade....UGH!

Not sure this is the BEST way - but when I needed to learn a little Spanish - I got one of those SPANISH in 10 MINUTES A DAY - it's a series - they come in French, German, and a host of others- not sure exactly which ones. Anyhow, the book comes with stickers that you put on all the items in your home - desk, lamp, chair, fridge, etc. - you get the drift, so you're seeing the words all day in your own home or car...then there's lessons that are pretty simple and straightforward. I can't remember if it also comes with a tape. But, true, in 10 minutes per day, you can pick up a lot! Just saying what worked for me better than anything else. It was just for a trip, so I've mostly forgotten everything since, but it was good when I needed it!

!......i cant wait to have friends over i only get to when she is gone....the jw effect is still omnipresent and i dont even know how much 45 years of ingraining has wired my brain.........................oompa.

Oompa - It's all consuming. 24/7 - I read this site constantly; don't always comment, but read voraciously. Religious history; anything to do with the Bible, gospels of every description, canonical or not; it's all just so damn fascinating - so much more so than when I was in. Back when I had all the answers, JWism was so ridiculously boring. Read, underline, comment, field circus, rinse, repeat. Since I quit the meetings, I have had the time to collect and compare umpteen Bibles and lo and behold, they're not all the same. They're all DIFFERENT!
I share your obsessiveness. The family, however, doesn't to the extent that I do, so I'm now the 'religious nut' in the household because I'm always spouting about the latest discovery I've made in relation to this or that doctrine; this or that translation of a scripture or JW teaching. All in good fun, of course. In bashing all the falsities/incongruities we came to accept in this religion (in which we were more or less born-in), we all do our share of laughing and commiserating. I've been lucky to find other like-minded individuals to hang out with (both fringe JWs and worldlies), so this is actually a topic we talk a great deal about. Probably all part of the ongoing recovery. I don't know if it will ever get better, but my TRUE FRIENDS are putting up with it, so all is good!

Ok, this just in:
I ran into a dub drone the other day who cautioned me ad infinitum that we were AT THE END NOW. The brothers KNOW THESE THINGS. When I countered that "Concerning the day and the hour, no one knows, not even the Son", I was told NOT SO! BOTH JESUS AND THE 144,000 DO KNOW at this point exactly when it will be and it is NOW! "Would a general be sent out to do battle without knowing the exact circumstances of what is to happen?" So, I should be very wary of being caught off guard by Satan, because the END IS NOW and the domino effect has started.
I kid you not. It was very difficult to hold my tongue. I highlighted all that part so that all of you are forewarned...

Leo, thanks for the quick reply! Sour notes are always much appreciated(!)...Seriously, though, thank you for all of your research and the informative link and background information.
The fact that the Vatican denies knowledge of either the manuscript or Mr. Szekely's access to same is more or less a non sequitur, as far as I am concerned. From what I have read about ecclesiastical history and the Vatican's role in politics and church-empire-building leads me to absolutely believe that its Archives contain explosive material that MUST CONTINUE TO BE SUPPRESSED at all costs, if it is not to have disastrous effects on the 'Christianity' that it has engendered, fostered and foisted upon the whole of humanity; from the 'Donation of Constantine' onward. There is every reason to believe that anything that connected Jesus to the Essenes would remain hidden. Thus, it would not be surprising that Mr. Szekely has very little to say about his discovery, and eventually even retracts what he initially says about it.
It is called a 'Gospel of Peace'. I can honestly say that it is one of the most peaceful pieces of writing I have ever read. IF Mr. Szekely wrote it, I find it enlightening; I find it inspiring. I guess I am willing to wait until the Vatican Archives are eventually open to the world to determine whether or not some of these are the authentic sayings of Jesus. In the meantime, I find this Gospel to be a window into the era BEFORE Jesus' Church was hijacked to become the institution it is today.

Yeah, and though this might not sound like a big deal, it was probably one of the contributing factors to our family's withdrawal from the so-called loving brotherhood.
Needed a ride to the hall, after years and years of attendance. Family of multiple cars, so NEVER needed a ride, in fact always willing to give others rides, and available to assist anyone with transportation, moving, etc. etc. But ONCE, in how many years? and we were absolutely WITHOUT A VEHICLE. Wanted to make the meeting so asked our book study conductor if it was possible for our familiy to be picked up, just this once? What a rigamarole...First off, couldn't we call another family? The conductor's wife suggests an alternate family - I explained that their vehicle wouldn't be large enough for our group; so that wouldn't work; she then proceeds to explain how little room is in their vehicle; blah, blah - I mean I couldn't even comprehend someone going to these lengths to avoid picking someone up, and these were actually our FRIENDS! I could hear the conductor's wife absolutely scrambling to come up with some excuse why it wouldn't be possible...long story short, they actually came and picked us up but complained the whole time about having to do so. Ok, so far so good. Get to the Hall. Now after the meeting, we need a ride home, but these folks are going out in the ministry, so can we scrounge around for a ride home? GEEZE LOUISE....here we go again. FINALLY, somebody who actually had to go OUT OF THEIR WAY agreed to take us home but I was exhausted...this just proved to me that when push came to shove, there was no actual LOVE to be had, it was all hot air and blather. So yeah, a real let down.
The funny thing is, now that we don't go to the Hall at all, we still hear from these folks who we actually like and get along real well with. Well, except for asking for rides, that is...

Has anyone seen this Watchtower article before?
by T.F. inhi, my first post here.
i stumbled across something in the watchtower 1981 magazine (in my wbts library cd) showing the faithful and discreet slave is "a composite individual".
i have never seen this anywhere before, but the wbts set-up of the fds as "a composite individual" looks somewhat similar to the trinity of three divine persons in one true god.

GREAT FIND!
They would pretty well HAVE to say something as bafflegabeous as that to make the literal number of 144,000 FIT into an entity called the 'slave' (singular). They accuse the Catholic Church of contortions to make theology 'rational' and do the very same themselves. HYPOCRITES!
By the way, a very big WELCOME to the BOARD - we need fresh insights from thinkers like you!

Anyone here familiar with the above? Any insights?
On one of my forays into second-hand bookstores, I picked up the Es*sene Gospel of Peace, which I finally had a chance to read. It absolutely blew me away...this 'book' was apparently found by Mr. Szekely in a V*tican archive and has apparently been translated from the Aramaic, first published in the 1920's. I am having difficulty obtaining his subsequent book (1975) which apparently documents his amazing discovery of this treasure, which I would be very interested to read.
I have since found that the 'book' is available online; it can be read in a relatively short time, and I urge anyone who is interested to check it out! Any comments you have are much appreciated.
Of the many things that struck me, one was that the Gospel contained not only the Our Father prayer, but also the Our Mother(!) - also uncannily similar wording to the 1 Corinthians passage about love, an expounding on what it means to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect (a much better explanation than that offered in any WT litterature), and much more. I also have Volumes 2 -4 of the same Gospel which I very much look forward to reading. It has been suggested that many of the teachings (which are in answer to questions posed to Jesus as to why so many were ill and suffering by the actual lame and blind of the time, etc.) may be Christ's true teachings that were suppressed by the Church prior to the decisions made as to which books to include in the 'official' canon. From what I have read, this makes a lot of sense to me.
Anyhow, I very much look forward to any insights you can share....I am sure someone here must have a take on it ... Leolaia? Thanks all!

Unbelievable story. Thank you for sharing what must still at times be very painful memories. How you endured what you did is beyond inspiring. And now, to beat all, you bless us with your renditions of the Witchtower and Erbrechet!
